BeamExpress SA, a Lausanne-based privately owned SME, develops and commercializes long wavelength (1200nm to 1650nm) Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) for the communication market. IP of the company relies on a proprietary “Localized” wafer-fusion VCSEL technology. BeamExpress has access to the epitaxial growth, materials characterization and clean room facilities of the Laboratory of Physics of Nanostructures (LPN) at EPFL for the development of its advanced semiconductor materials. BeamExpress outsources the production of its VCSEL to a world-class European component manufacturer.



Role of BX in the FAB2ASM Project

In WP2, BX will develop long wavelength VCSELs specifically designed for automatic integration on to Silicon bench, using its wafer fusion technology, particularly high single mode power and high speed VCSELs. In WP5, BX will test performance of integrated VCSELs mounted on Silicon substrate. In WP6, BX will be leading demonstrations of self-aligned, ultra-small VCSEL on silicon bench.
The “Wafer processing” fabrication step will be outsourced to specialized manufacturers. It will make possible building highly integrated optical engine for tomorrow Local Area Networks, Broadband Access Networks and computer Storage Networks. BeamExpress will collaborate with the other consortium members on establishing advanced VCSEL integration and manufacturing technologies.


Key persons

Dr. Vladimir Iakovlev, has extensive scientific and industry experience related to III-V materials and long wavelength VCSEL. Vladimir is working on the development of next generation wafer-fused VCSELs and their characterization. Vladimir developed the “Localized double Wafer Fusion” VCSEL technology and the 2” wafer fabrication process enabling the fabrication of the best performance long wavelength VCSEL in the world. Vladimir holds 8 patents.
Grigore Suruceanu, Senior Product Development engineer, has extensive technical background in the area of compounds semiconductors and the design of photonic devices. Grigore is currently working on the design, characterization and fabrication of VCSEL-based optoelectronic devices as well as the development of advanced-packaging solutions. Grigore holds 2 patents.
